Number of pharmacies dispensing abortion pill is on the rise across US

An estimated 70+ abortion pill pharmacies have been certified and are now dispensing the abortion pill since the erosion of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) REMS safety requirements for the abortion pill mifepristone (200mg).

Key Takeaways:
  • Large retail abortion pill pharmacies Walgreens and CVS have become partners with Big Abortion, announcing that they finalized the pharmacy dispensing certification process last year. They recently expanded dispensing of abortion pills to more states.
  • University and hospital pharmacies — as well as dozens of locally-owned pharmacies — are also becoming certified.
  • Others are still holding the line against dispensing the abortion pill, such as Costco Wholesale, Walmart, and Albertsons, which “currently do not offer the medicine,” as of August 2025. Kroger and Sam’s Club stated in late 2024 that their pharmacies also were not selling the abortion pill mifepristone and that any appearance to the contrary was due to a third-party error.
  • There is still a growing concern regarding stability of abortion drugs sent through the mail.
