What does the Bible say about abortion?

When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, thereby sending the issue of abortion back to the states for the first time since 1973, many understandably proclaimed it a victory for the sanctity of life. However, while there was a decrease initially, reports now show that abortions have increased across the country, including in states that have all but banned them.

Moreover, many states have expanded access to abortion, in some cases well beyond what was legal when Roe v. Wade was still the law of the land. Those new laws, combined with increased access to pharmaceutical abortifacients even in states where abortion is otherwise restricted, have meant that the number of abortions per year has risen to more than one million, a number dramatically higher than it was before Roe was overturned.

Clearly, the Court’s decision was not enough, and it was never going to be. So where do we go from here?

Given that nearly 70 percent of Americans support at least some access to abortion during the first trimester—though that support wanes quickly in the second trimester and beyond—it’s unlikely that the issue is going away anytime soon. Moreover, while politicians on both sides have pressed for passing federal legislation on the subject as well, neither side appears close to having the necessary support to do so without opening a Pandora’s box of related issues. As such, it is likely that abortion law will remain with the states for the foreseeable future.
